State Attorney General Gets Serious About HIPAA Violations

On August 29th, 2018 the Attorney General for New York announced a settlement for $200,000 with the Arc of Erie County for the the unauthorized disclosure of the PHI of more than 3500 clients. This is not the first time that New York has taken the lead in enforcing the HIPAA rules at the state level. In March of 2018, the Attorney General's office announced a $575,000 settlement with EmblemHealth for a breach involving the social security numbers of some 80,000 of their patients.
